Richard Torrez defeated Guido Vianello by unanimous decision in 10 rounds of heavyweight clashes in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
As a result, the U.S.’s huge commitment heavyweight – the silver medalist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics – still remains unbeaten, arguably the toughest test of his 13 professional games against his Olympic compatriot (Rio 2016) Vianello so far.
From the beginning, Vianello, who was bullied by Torres (13-0, 11 kos), ran wildly with his left hand and right hook. Vianello (13-3-1, 11 KOS) caught him to avoid damage, so much so that he was deducted a point in the second round.
As Torres continued, the Italians tried to fight back, shooting as much as possible, although occasionally encountering the way.
Vianello connected to the chopped shot in the fifth round, but Torrez shot and hindered his momentum. The two were at the eighth toe, and Torres beat his opponent in ninth and took control of the final round.
All three judges fought Torrez, two of whom gave him 98-91 and the other tagged him 97-92.
Torres said after the victory: “I tried to set up my own pretend and body shots. Then, my body shots started to increase. From there, other shots started to land like my hooks. That’s what we planned.
“He’s an Olympian. I’ve given him all the honors. He’s an excellent fighter. I can’t do anything but respect him, but Tulare, California, came out today.
“I don’t say no to the fight. I hope this is clear. I want to know that. I will be right for those you give me.”
In the fight for the junior welterweight contender, Lindolfo Delgado (23-0, 16 KOS) maintained his unbeaten record with a majority decision on the 10-round razor against Dominican boxer Elvis Rodriguez (17-2-1, 13 kos). Scores -95-95, 96-94, 96-94-indicate the competitive inclination, which is split with its Rattlesnake observer.
Abdullah Mason (18-0, 16 KO) celebrated his 21st birthday with a sixth round TKO on Carlos Ornelas (28-5, 15 kos) to capture the NABF and NABO lightweight champions.
Lightweight Albert “Chapter” Gonzalez (13-0, 7 kos) took a worker-like decision on tough Australian Australian Dana Coolwell (13-4, 8 kos), while Jahi Tucker (14-1-1, 6 kos) took a dominant decision on the first 10 rounds of champions champions (Kos).
