Ross Atkins on…the politics of pardons


On Inauguration Day, both outgoing and incoming U.S. presidents issued controversial pardons, stretching their powers to new limits.

Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons to family members, while Donald Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 people charged with crimes related to the U.S. Capitol riots.

BBC Analysis Editor Ross Atkins looks at how the pair cited “politically motivated prosecutions” to explain their actions, and why this poses a challenge to trust in the justice system going forward.
