These are the major developments 1,066 days into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Here’s what it looked like on Saturday, January 25th:
struggle
- Russia’s Defense Ministry claims its troops have broken into the strategically important Ukrainian town of Velyka Novosilka after months of fighting.
- Moscow said it intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones, including 37 in Russia’s Bryansk, 20 in Ruishan and 17 in the country’s Kursk and Saratov regions.
- The Ukrainian army said Russian forces failed to detach troops in Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region as Russia sought to cut off supply lines to Ukrainian defenders in the town. The area is a key logistics hub for Ukrainian forces in the region.
- An analysis by the ORYX project shows that since February 2022, Russia has lost 20,000 pieces of military equipment, of which 15,051 units were directly destroyed in the conflict with Ukraine, resulting in the loss of 852 personnel.
- The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and independent outlet Mediazona have identified 90,019 names of Russian soldiers who have died in Ukraine, adding 1,964 names to their list since an update in early mid-January.
- Ukraine is in the final stages of drafting recruitment reforms that would allow people aged between 18 and 25, who are currently exempt from mobilization, to join the army to bolster the country’s fighting forces.
- Ukrainian military officials say the reforms are necessary because the country currently operates on a recruitment system inherited from the Soviet Union.
Politics and Diplomacy
- Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested meeting US President Donald Trump in person to discuss the outcome of the war in Ukraine.
- Putin said he always had a “pragmatic and trusting” relationship with Trump and supported his view that he was the real winner of the 2020 US election.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused his Russian counterpart of trying to manipulate Trump into ending the war on Moscow’s terms.
military aid
- The United States on Friday froze all foreign aid for 90 days in a detailed executive order that also halted development and military aid to Ukraine, including billions of dollars in weapons.
- Sales to foreign governments will rise 29% in 2024, reaching a record $318.7 billion, the State Department said.
regional development
- Thousands of protesters gathered in a central square in the Slovak capital to protest Prime Minister Robert Fico’s policy shift toward Russia. Rallies were also held in 20 other cities, nearly matching the scale of protests that forced FICO to leave its offices in 2018.
- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, pardoned 15 prisoners two days before an election expected to extend his more than 30 years in power.
- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has threatened to block the EU’s renewal of Russia.
regional security
- Denmark has agreed to discuss Arctic security with the United States, despite heated calls from Donald Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in early January, which the U.S. president said he wanted Greenland.
economy
- Trump reiterated calls for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to lower oil prices to hurt oil-rich Russia’s finances and help end the war in Ukraine.
- The leader of Moldova’s separatist multinational region was short on gas and heating on Friday, with his remaining gas reserves set to be empty within days of the Gazprom meeting in Moscow. No one.
