Jon Rahm hopes his appeal against a LIV fine won’t be heard before the Ryder Cup.
Lahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronque have all appealed against monetary sanctions imposed for their unauthorized involvement in the Saudi-funded breakaway.
This means they can compete in enough DP World Tour events to retain their membership and qualify for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage in September.
No date or deadline has been set for the appeal, which two-time DP World Tour champion Eddie Pepperell said last year would not be “convenient” unless Europe won on US soil for the first time since 2012. .
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but I can tell you my plan is to join Team Bethpage,” Rahm said at a press conference ahead of his debut at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. sky sports live Starting Thursday.
Asked if he would pay the fine if the appeal fails, Rahm added: “I don’t know what will happen and I hope they don’t try to resolve the appeal before the Ryder Cup.
“I don’t think it’s good for anybody.”
Lahm: Golf deal can take sport to a different level
Players who initially joined LIV in June 2022 appealed their suspensions and fines and were able to compete until April 2023, when an arbitration panel ruled in favor of the DP World Tour and approved its enforcement regulations right.
Two months later, the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which funds LIV Golf, announced they had signed a “framework agreement” aimed at ending golf’s civil war.
Negotiations have been ongoing since then, with Lahm admitting he expected a solution to be closer than it now appears.
“I think a lot of us would say that when the framework agreement was agreed a year and a half ago, things will now go further,” the two-time Grand Slam winner said.
“And it’s hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes. It depends on people much more senior than me.
“I don’t know what their vision is or what their expectations are for it. But I think we’re living in a golden age of golf right now, where the possibilities are endless.
“You have big tours in Europe and around the world, the PGA Tour, you have another big product with LIV and now you’ve even added TGL. When it comes to golf, there are possibilities now.
“I think with the right mind you can eventually develop a product that I’ve been saying can take golf to a different level in the sporting world. I still hope that can happen.”
Rahm also reiterated his support for fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who has paid a hefty fine and rejoined the DP World Tour to compete in a European-record 11th Ryder Cup.
“For anyone who sees him on any given day, Sergio Garcia can hit the ball better than anyone on the planet,” Rahm said. “It’s that simple. He’s still that good, he’s still very valuable.
“I understand the change of circumstances. I understand. But at the end of the day, as a Spaniard, a friend and a mentor, I would obviously have a bias against him. I would love to see him in the team room.
“I think Sergio will have a place in the Ryder Cup at any time. It’s just a matter of letting his club do the talking.”
