Savannah Marshall intends to return to boxing in 2025 and seek a rematch with Clarissa Shields until she moves up to heavyweight.
Marshall’s only loss in professional boxing came against longtime rival Shields in a major fight in 2022.
The Briton became the undisputed super middleweight world champion in 2023 with a victory over Franchon Cruz-Dezuin, but she didn’t box at all when she transitioned to MMA and competed in the PFL last year.
But she plans to return to boxing in 2025. She wants a rematch with Shields and is especially eager to challenge the American superstar for the heavyweight world title.
Shields will fight Danielle Perkins on February 2 for the WBC, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles.
Marshall hopes Shields can win this fight and welcome a heavyweight title shot against her great opponent.
“I think I’ll follow Clarissa’s lead and go up,” Marshall told sky sports. “Hopefully this will spark this fight again.”
This is the fight Marshall wants the most, and the possibility of a shot at the undisputed heavyweight championship will make it even more appealing.
“I went to MMA hoping to catch her there, but that didn’t happen,” Marshall said. “Have a fight in March and then hopefully she’ll be there in the summer.
“Size-wise, I’m probably the biggest out there, both in height and build. The pool is so shallow and the competition is tough. I can carry lightweights, heavyweights. It’s not really an issue.”
She believes a heavyweight bout with Shields could give her an advantage. “I’m (bigger than her). Hopefully that will slow her down a little bit! So that’s a plus,” Marshall said.
“This is the biggest battle for both of us.”
Marshall also believes her new experience in MMA will make her a more dangerous fighter.
“I was at a point in my career where I needed some changes. I’ve been boxing for a long time, I’ve been boxing for about 23 years,” she said. “I think wrestling and grappling is the best form of S&C and I’ve never been stronger. I’ve never been healthier.”
But she added: “I know where I went wrong (in the first Shields game). I know the mistakes I made. Look, I thought the first game was an exciting game, so let’s Makes the second game even more interesting.”
Shields’ promoter Dmitry Salita invited Marshall to attend Shields’ next fight.
“The rivalry between Clarissa Shields and Savannah Marshall has a rich history. It drove Clarissa to travel thousands of miles to avenge her only defeat, in the best fight I have ever seen An incredible performance in one,” Salita told sky sports.
“Their story goes beyond the ring, with Savannah even appearing in Clarissa’s film The Fire Within, which became a hit in the US and will soon be released in the UK.
“The exposure and storytelling of this film are priceless, allowing new fans to have a deeper connection with women’s boxing. This not only strengthens the sport, but makes a rematch – or rather, a trilogy – More eye-catching, with the potential for global cross-border appeal.
“We invite Savannah to attend the Clarissa Tournament in Flint on February 2, and we are eager to discuss ways to achieve a professional return in the second quarter of 2025.”
