Severance returned, and yet season two is the just one episodefans are already making theories about WHAT Granted continues as the sci-fi thriller on Apple TV+ enters its next chapter. We’ll have to be patient as the pieces of the puzzle fall in the weekly release, but the opening scene of the season premiere sets up the breath-taking, confusing path that the characters—especially Adam Scott’s Mark S. mystery behind Lumon Industries.
In a new video from Vanity Fair, executive producer Ben Stiller, who also directed the season premiere “Hello, Ms. Cobel,” and star Scott go behind the scenes of such a chaotic order. It took four to five months to complete and involved more special effects and logistical maneuvers than Severance often require.
As the couple explained, Mark ran as soon as he exited the elevator-back to his “innie” mindspace for the first time since realizing that his Lumon co-worker Ms. Casey is really Gemma, the wife that his “outie” believes. died in a car crash—because his first desire was to find Ms. Casey and share this amazing discovery with him.
But the route to the wellness room proves to be more of a journey than the viewer realizes. Lumon’s broken floor felt like a mile-long maze of white corridors and right-angled turns.
While Mark was pretty confident he knew how to sprint there, capturing his crazy dash was technically more difficult than just following Scott around with the Steadicam. It consisted of a large piece of camera equipment called a “bolt arm,” as well as a patchwork of hallway shots set each time it was set up to support the sequence—and a treadmill for of Scott in some places.
“We don’t like to use visual effects on the show in terms of creating backgrounds and environments,” Stiller said. “But we need this shot because of the bolt arm taking up all the space.”
The video goes on to explain why Stiller didn’t use a Steadicam (it would have been “too intense” for the operator to use while following Mark’s accelerating pace), as well as how Scott knew when he was filming a high-intensity scene when he was asked what flavor of Gatorade he wanted.
“We always felt like we really wanted to kick off the season in a way that was exciting and fun, and kind of hinted at where we’re going in season two,” Stiller said. “(The shot) felt like, ‘Okay, we’re going to let the audience know that this is something new that’s happening.”
Oh, and that dude who appeared behind Mark when he got to the former wellness room? Scott and Stiller point to him in the video, but don’t reveal anything else about his identity. Add that to your ever-growing list of theories! New episodes of Severance arrives Friday on Apple TV+.
