Smog causes travel chaos in India’s capital


Heavy fog and severe air quality caused travel chaos in India’s capital Delhi.

Zero visibility was reported in several areas in the early hours of Friday, disrupting flights, trains and road transport.

More than 150 flights have been reported delayed and dozens of trains delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

Delhi Airport has issued a warning to passengers that flights may be disrupted due to low visibility.

“While landings and departures at Delhi airport continue, flights that are not CAT III compliant may be affected,” consult read. CAT III is a system that allows aircraft to land in poor visibility.

According to flight tracking website flightradar24, departure flights at Delhi Airport were delayed by more than 30 minutes and arriving flights by nearly 20 minutes.

Some passengers took to social media to complain about the chaos at the airport.

“No gate is showing and no one seems to know the exact status,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, the Indian Railways said 26 trains to the city were delayed due to heavy fog.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted light showers over the weekend and visibility conditions are expected to improve.
