Snow showers are rare in the southern U.S.—and now a blizzard is coming

A rare winter storm brought snow and freezing rain to parts of the Deep South, closing highways and airports and prompting the first blizzard warning in southwestern Louisiana.

Four people are believed to have died from the cold so far – authorities in Austin, Texas, are investigating two cold-related cases, while two deaths from hypothermia were reported in Georgia and Milwaukee.

This extreme weather is part of a frigid air mass descending on the southern and eastern United States.

Video shows nuns and a priest in Marteri, Louisiana, having a snowball fight while a skier is pulled along the streets of Charleston, South Carolina.
