The Celtics still need two wins to win the Scottish Premier League title after a 1-0 defeat at Rock Bottom St Johnstone.
Daniels Balodis shocked the election with a fourth-minute header on Graham Carey’s delicious free kick delivery, which lost only a fourth in the league on Brendan Rodgers.
The Rangers’ 2-0 defeat at home against Heberia on Saturday made the Celtics know they could have won the title at home next weekend, and then they beat St John Johnstone, but they failed to score for the third time in the league this season.
St. Johnstone goalkeeper Andy Fisher was excellent at the Celtics, while Stephen Duke-Mckenna made a crucial interception to stop Nicolas Kuhn from equalizing in the first half.
During the opening period, lockdown locked in a loose rear cross, Fisher turned down Daizen Maeda, although Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo did have to save from a curly-haired Duke-Mckenna shot.
Rodgers brought Hyun-Jun Yang and Greg Taylor in the half-time, which helped visitors dominate in the second phase.
Reo Hatate smashed a hard effort on the left when Fisher was putting a good box in the box before he was late to the center stage.
The goalkeeper made a brilliant and massive save, pounced on his right-wing replacement James Forrest’s close range shot, and then denied Luke McCowan when injured.
Now, St Johnstone has six points in safety, while the Celtic still keeps 13 points higher than the Rangers.
“We have to win this next week”
St. Johnstone Goalkeepers and players of the game Andy Fisher Tell Sky Sports:
“It’s big, but if we lose next week, there’s nothing. We need to keep working hard and focus on the next game.
“The guys in front of me were great throughout the game. I could save on these games, and I think I did. Hopefully I showed what I could do.”
“We need heroes”
St. Johnstone manager Simo Valakari Tell Sky Sports:
“We need perspective, we need victory. We need to put our hearts wholeheartedly.
“Last week and our performance, we were hurt a lot. The boys worked hard, we needed some heroes, Andy Fisher had some huge savings, our guards, forwards, how they defended. Then, you give yourself a chance.
“The most important thing is that nothing has changed. We got three points and we need to continue fighting.”
