Stellantis idle plants in Mexico and Canada due to tariffs

Detroit – Stellantis Production is suspending at two assembly plants in Canada and Mexico when the company tries to navigate the president Donald TrumpA new round 25% car tariff Effective on Thursday.

Downtime includes the entire month of the car manufacturer Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada and the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico in April. Both start on Monday.

Due to the production pause, approximately 900 representative U.S. plants support workers will be temporarily fired, in addition to about 4,500 hours of workers at the Canadian plant. A company spokesman said workers at the Mexican factory will still report to the facility, but will not produce vehicles due to the terms of its contract.

In an email to employees Thursday, Strantis North American Chief Antonio Filosa said the factory’s downtime was related to tariffs as the company reviewed its options.

“We are continuing to evaluate the medium- and long-term impact of these tariffs on our operations, but have also decided to take some immediate actions, including temporary suspension of production at some assembly plants in Canada and Mexico,” Fillosa said. “These actions will affect several of our U.S. powertrains and some employees at the plants supporting these actions.”

The Canadian factory produces the Chrysler Pacifica Minivan and the recently released Dodge Charger Daytona EV. The Mexican factory produces Jeep SUVs and Jeep Wagoneer S EVs.

“The current environment creates uncertainty,” Fillosa said, but assured employees that the company will continue to look for a new CEO, “very engaging with all our key stakeholders, including senior government leaders, unions, suppliers, key stakeholders in Canada and Mexico.”
