Tamim Iqbal, one BangladeshCricket’s most prolific cricketer took to social media on Friday to confirm his retirement from international cricket with a heartfelt post. The announcement marks his second exit from the sport after a brief return last year.

Tamim’s final farewell

In a detailed statement posted on his official Facebook page, Tamim Iqbal It was revealed that his decision was made after careful consideration. Despite efforts by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to bring him back for the upcoming Champions Trophy, the former captain is sticking to his choice.

“I have been away from international cricket for a long time. That distance will continue to exist. My international cricket chapter is over. I have been thinking about it for a long time. Now that a big event like the Champions Trophy is coming, I don’t want to Being the center of anyone’s attention could cause the team to lose focus, and of course I didn’t want that to happen before,” Tamim wrote.

The veteran batsman acknowledged the efforts made by captain Najmul Hussain Shanto and the selection panel to convince him to reconsider his decision. But in the end he chose to follow his heart.

“Captain Najmul Hussain Shanto sincerely requested me to return to the team. Discussions were also held with the selection committee. I am grateful that they are still considering me for the team. However, I followed my heart,” he added.

Tamim Iqbal’s legacy

Tamim made his international debut in February 2007, against Zimbabwe. Over the years, he has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s most reliable batsmen. His aggressive style, especially at the top of the table, has been instrumental in many of the team’s historic wins.

Tamim completed 70 Tests, 243 ODIs and 78 T20Is, becoming one of Bangladesh’s highest run-scorers across all formats. He ranks second in Bangladesh’s total run-scoring list behind Mushfiqur Rahim. Additionally, he holds the record for most international appearances by a Bangladeshi batsman.

Emotional roller coaster

Tamim’s relationship with international cricket has always been rocky. He first retired in an emotional press conference in July 2023. However, the decision was quickly overturned following the intervention of then-Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who asked Tamim to reconsider.

Despite returning to the team, Tamim remained absent from international cricket for a long period of time. He finally decided to retire after meeting Bangladeshi electors in Sylhet earlier this week. The panel led by Ghazi Ashraf Hussain urged him to be ready for the Champions Trophy. Still, Tamim remained steadfast.

“I was released from my BCB central contract long ago as I did not want to return to international cricket,” Tamim wrote. “Many people said that I left the matter pending. Why would anyone discuss no longer being in BCB contract? The cricketer on the list? I resigned on my own initiative over a year ago.”

Cricket giant bids farewell

“The decision to retire or continue playing is the right of a cricketer or any professional sportsperson. I have given myself time. Now I feel the time has come,” Tamim concluded.

With the January 12 deadline to announce the Champions Trophy squad looming, Bangladesh will now look to the future without one of its most famous players.
