Tank Davis begins training for title defense against Lamont Roach

WBA lightweight champion Javonta Davis begins a 56-day defense of her title against Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) is working hard on his conditioning because he knows Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) will be a tough knockout. He will likely need to get into the later rounds against the 29-year-old Roach before he can score.

Weight is not an issue

Gervonta appears to be in good physical condition, weighing very little and almost in fighting shape. When you compare his looks to fighters like Keyshawn Davis, it’s like night and day.

Keyshawn weighed in at a big welterweight during training camp but somehow got cut down to 135. Tank is a natural lightweight, not a weight juggernaut trying to game the system. Tank’s longtime coach Calvin Ford was nowhere to be seen, leading some to wonder if he had parted ways.

“I can understand where he’s coming from. It’s different when you have kids. It changes your life. It completely changes your life,” Leonard Ellerbe said. plaz labtalking about Gervonta Davis’ decision to retire after three more games.

“He looks at things differently than he did six or seven years ago. If that’s what he said (that he was retiring), we all heard him. No, not at all. What you do is never good enough, sometimes This can be frustrating.

“There’s more to life than just what you do to make a living. You respect the fans who pay to see you fight, but you also have a life outside of boxing. They want you to keep doing it and they really don’t care about your health after that.

Tank Davis will likely see a number of fighters take a breather in his next fight, such as Andy Cruz, Edwin De Los Santos and Keyshawn Davis. He may not have the confidence to beat them all or any one person. If he does think he can win, he knows it’s going to be a tough fight for him and he may not want to put in the effort.

“Boxing is a brutal sport. You see a lot of former fighters; they’ve been taken advantage of in so many different ways. They’ve gone through a lot of health issues, a lot of permanent issues. I understand the idea that you come into this Movement and leaving your mark and then leaving. Everyone has a different perspective and everyone has different goals in life,” Ellerbe said.

It will be interesting to see if Tank’s retirement is permanent, or if he will return in six to twelve months when he gets bored or offers a lot of money for a specific battle. Gervonta is so popular that it’s hard not to see him being offered huge sums of money for a big fight, and he agrees to take it.
