Target announced on January 24 that it will reduce its initiatives of diversity, equity and inclusion, Dei. It has been reported that the change was made to align its workforce and the most closely offered products with its customer base, after the taking over the President Donald Trump.
In a note to the employees, the minorist based in Minneapolis revealed his plans to suspend his three -year Dei goals, which include Target to stop informing external diversity organizations such as the corporate equality index of the campaign of Human Rights and ending a program designed to include more products from black and minority -owned companies in their stores.
The ad mark was published in Target staff this week and was written by Target’s Community Impact and Equity, Kiera Fernandez, and as reported. shared With CNBC.
The note said: “Many years of data, knowledge, listening and learning have been shaping this next chapter of our strategy.”
Fernandez continued: “And as a retailer (Target) that serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of being up to date with the evolution of the external landscape, now and in the future, all in the service of promoting the Target growth and win together. “
A Target spokesman clarified that there are no labor cuts planned to be part of Friday’s announcement on Friday.
This is a great deviation from the sentiment of Target’s CEO, Brian Cornell, four years ago.
After the assassination of George Floyd, which took place very close to Target’s headquarters in his hometown, Cornell described Dei’s efforts as “personal”. He said that the incident of police brutality motivated him to strengthen Target’s diversity efforts throughout the company.
At that time, he said, “This could have been one of the members of my Target team.”
The reduction of DEI’s efforts will include many of the programs that began after Floyd’s death.
Target started a program to help black entrepreneurs develop, try and learn how to scale their products to sell them to large distributors, as well as promising to spend more than $ 2 billion on black -owned businesses this year. Another DEI initiative that will see changes includes the $ 10 million that Target and its related companies gave the National Urban League and the African American Leadership Forum in support of social justice groups.
The decision of the company to reduce the DEI comes almost immediately after President Donald Trump’s executive orders to stop all the Government’s DEI programs and leave the federal officials who supervised these initiatives. Trump signed the order just after being inaugurated.
