Teofimo Lopez told Devin Haney he was reminded of the March 25 game and called him a “punk asshole” on social media. WBO light welterweight champion Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) seemed unhappy with Devin not accepting the offer to fight him.
The offer was $2.4 million, which Teofimo won in a 55-45 vote, arguing he deserved a bigger cut because he was the “king” of the 140-pound division. Haney is just a former champion, losing to Ryan Garcia on April 20th.
Wolves circle Haney
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will face an as-yet-unannounced opponent on March 25 at BLT Prime. Boxing insiders will be very interested to see who Haney faces on that day, as he could pick just about anyone.
The fighters weren’t afraid to fight Haney after Garcia exposed him in a 12-round majority decision win. His performance in the loss to King Ray was so bad that the 140-year-old wolves swarmed around him, viewing him as easy prey.
Devin knocked the deck three times in that fight, and many believed the referee stopped the fight and deducted a point from Ryan’s takedown, saving him from being knocked out in the seventh round.
At the time, Haney was on the verge of being knocked out by Garcia. Given that the New York State Athletic Commission later overturned Haney’s defeat, it didn’t matter if Ryan knocked him out.
Teofimo is expected to fight on a premier promotion card against former IBF 140-pound champion Subril Matias (21-2, 21 KOs) on March 15 on ESPN+. Lopez has a hard time getting big-name stars to fight against him.
He called up Terrence Crawford, Jalen “Butz” Ennis, Haney, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis. The only ones interested in fighting Lopez are lightweight contenders Keyshawn Davis and Mathias. He’s not interested in fighting Keyshawn because he’s not a star.
