The Israeli army began attacks on the West Bank

The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had launched what it described as a counter-terrorism operation in Jenin, a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank that has become a hotbed of militancy.

No further details were given, but the new attack comes amid rising tensions in the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority, which has usually left security in the area to Israel, is carrying out an unusually public crackdown on militants in the territory under Israeli occupation.

On Monday night, Jewish extremists raided several Palestinian villages in the West Bank, just hours after President Trump lifted sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on dozens of Israeli individuals and far-right settler groups accused of violence against Palestinians.

The lifting of sanctions was one of the a long list of executive orders signed by Mr. Trump immediately after his inauguration. Palestinian officials sharply criticized the move, saying it was likely to fuel further violence. Hard-line members of Israel’s right-wing government and leaders of the Jewish settlement movement in the West Bank demanded the lifting of the sanctions that then-President Biden imposed in an executive order he signed nearly a year ago.

Some leaders of the settlers have cultivated close ties with associates of Mr. Trump, including Mike HuckabeeMr. Trump’s choice to be the next ambassador to Jerusalem.

The lifting of sanctions coincided with a second straight night of violence in the West Bank as extremist settlers protested a Gaza ceasefire that took effect on Sunday and ushered in a period of lull after 15 months of war sparked by an Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel . The attackers set fire to vehicles and property, according to Palestinian officials and the Israeli military.

Far-right members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and their supporters oppose the ceasefire, the first phase of which calls for a six-week truce and a weekly exchange of a total of 33 hostages held in Gaza for hundreds of others. Palestinian prisoners.

The details of the second phase of the agreement have yet to be negotiated, but it calls for the temporary ceasefire to become permanent and for the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

Violence in the West Bank escalated sharply after the October 7 attacks. The growing power of militants in West Bank cities such as Jenin and Tulkarm has encouraged the deadly cycle of Israeli attacks and drone strikeswho devastated Palestinian settlements.

Israeli troops have been occupying neighborhoods for days, looking like bulldozers for suspected militants chew through the roads looking for explosives. Israel’s military says its soldiers were forced to launch deadly attacks to quell the militants.
