This weekend, viewers in Japan will be able to watch the new hotness Mobile Suit Gundam series, GQuuuuuuXin movie theaters. Fortunately, North American viewers will also get a chance to see the upcoming anime on the big screen, as well — we’ll just have to wait a little longer before that happens.
On Friday, the film’s distributor Gkids revealed that it had picked up the theatrical rights for the Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX -Start- film. It hits theaters here on February 28th and runs for… that’s not clear at the moment, nor is it clear if the screenings will have Japanese audio only (like when Dan Da Dan hit theaters last year), or include the English dub. While the larger franchise is no stranger to theatrical releases and compilations, this is a first Gundam show since Reconquista in Mr with the first three episodes already in theaters, and the first show in the franchise season to reach North American locations.

GQuuuuuuX there is a lot of creative talent behind it Neon Genesis Evangelion alumni Kazuya Tsurumaki and Yoji Enokido, and franchise creator Hideaki Anno. In a statement, Gkids president David Jesteadt emphasized the creative pedigree of the mecha series, saying that their “awesome combination of artistic talent working together on a story series like. Mobile Suit Gundam is to see the appointment. We are proud to be a part of bringing an exciting new project to audiences in the cinematic experience that the film truly deserves.
While we wait Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX’s theatrical cut on February 28 (and the actual show hitting sometime this year), it probably wouldn’t hurt to catch up on the movies set by Universal Century’s continuity, because it seems important. On the other hand, Mubi has recently followed suit After War Gundam X, and that sounds like it’s good in its own right.
