Omnilert was used by Antioch High School, who experienced a fatal shootout earlier this month. However, the incident came out of the system’s field of view. “
Antioch high school in Nashville, Tennessee, was the last to experience a fatal shootout. After the tragedy, many have questioned the effectiveness of omnilert, the Fed artificial intelligence Weapons detection system used at school. Now, the company’s CEO, Dave Fraser, talks about the advantages and limitations of AI security systems.
“The way our system works is that it follows video cameras and, if you think, is essentially the role of a human,” Fraser told Fox Business. “But for it to work, it must be able to see a weapon in the same way that a human should see the weapon.”
Fraser explained that unlike traditional surveillance systems, which are often used after an incident, the omnilert system is intended to be used as a preventive tool, along with other mechanisms.

“The visual approach, which is quite new, offers some interesting benefits when it premieres with other technologies,” said Fraser.
Speaking specifically about the tragedy in Nashville, Fraser said that the shooting took place “out of the field of view,” making it “impossible” for omnilert to see the weapon and detect the threat.
In February 2023, the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board Greenlit A $ 1 million contract with Ai Ai Detection System, Omnilert, which will end on November 30, 2025, according to local Wkrn locality.
Fraser told Fox Business that omnilert systems are designed to function quickly, as with emergency situations “time is essential”.
“If you can see a weapon, it will usually detect it in less than a second and at this time the data on this potential detection are really sent to humans for verification.”

Once a threat has been verified, the omnilert system can automatically activate other security tools, such as alarms or lock gates. However, Fraser admits that no system is perfect and that, in an ideal world, omnilert would be combined with other security measures.
The “bottom line”, says Fraser, is to use “multiple layers of defense”.
On its website, Omnilert explains a possible approach to layers of school safety. The list includes staff training, site safety, surveillance cameras, metal detectors and more, as well as a system -fed system.
According to omnilert Annual report of violence against weaponsIt was published earlier this month before Antioch Secondary School shooting, in 2024 he saw the second highest number of K-12 school shot incidents since 1966.

Following the shooting, Fran Bush, a former member of the Metro Nashville Public Schools Council, told the Post of New York That “knew that day would happen.”
“I knew it would only happen because it is like a free open door, everyone comes in,” added Bush. He also said he unsuccessfully pushed the school district to bring metal detectors.
In response to a comments fox business request on the lack of Metal detectorsThe head of communications and technology of the MNPS, Sean Braisted, said that the school works with Evolv to pilot a covert weapon detection system.
