Early this morning, Nintendo has revealed the first look of his successor to the Nintendo Switch, it seems to be aptly named the Nintendo Switch 2. In a short video that shows some differences from its predecessor. As part of this, a brief scene of the Switch 2 controllers – called joycons on Nintendo’s original Switch – gliding on a surface that seems to act like a PC mouse is presented.

There is no accompanying text or narrative to go with it, so at best now all we can do is speculate. A side-view of the joycon seems to show what looks like an optical sensor or something similar. If so, this would indicate that the joycons can act like a PC mouse on a flat surface with the Switch 2.

In terms of gaming capabilities, it can provide a more precise control method for games that require fine movements. Games with manipulable cursors, such as Realtime Strategy titles, can simply use a mouse without having to connect to actual mouse hardware. It can even be used for shooters, but it will probably depend a lot on accuracy and speed.

There are even other games, like Nintendo’s own Super Mario Maker series, that struggle a bit with controller-only interpretations, but can find new life with a competent manipulable cursor.

Until Nintendo decides to reveal this feature (or dismiss it all as speculation), it’s all guesswork. The sooner we know new information about the system and its software in early April, according to today’s video.
