This Is Not Your Ordinary Car HUD: Hyundai Mobis Holographic Windshield Display Review
CNET’s Bridget Carey previews Hyundai Mobis’ new holographic window display at CES 2025
One of the biggest issues with having multiple screens in your car is that they can be distracting when you’re trying to drive. Well, I tested a concept car from Hyundai Mobis that put everything on the windshield with a new type of technology. This is no ordinary HUD. It uses projectors to show me information, and the passenger can’t see this thing, and I can’t see what the passenger sees. So here at CES, this little demonstration. I’m showing how I see my MPH flying right here in front of me. If I move my head, it’s gone. It’s like a weird little magic effect because what it does is it projects the image of a special film right here and that’s what makes it unique compared to other things. so it controls the light in different ways. For example, if you are driving in the sun and it is very bright, it will not be affected by that. I can’t test that here, but that’s what they mean. Technology for me. OK, so now I see, you know how fast I travel, what the speed limit is. I’m looking for directions there so I can tell you what music I’m listening to. If I want, I can put more. I can set the time, but when I change lanes, that’s when it starts giving me the other mirrors. Oh, look, right there I can see, oh, who’s on my left, what’s on my right, and I can get a different view from the cameras that are around the car if you like. navigation. The services also allow you to plan so that you don’t have to keep your eyes on the road if you want some kind of mapping system so that you can see that you know where you are going on your journey. It’s all just layered on top of everything else. I never changed my focus. I mean, in this example I see a television screen, obviously I’m not really driving, but I’m looking forward and just moving my eyes very low and I’m not looking around the car or turning around myself. head. So much to see where I’m going, so it has some interesting safety features here. I’m not a big fan of multiple screens in a car. I think they are distracting. So this is a step in the right direction. And what’s also interesting is that even the passenger can’t see how fast I’m driving. You become a passenger and you want to eyeball what the driver is doing, you can’t get that with this concept because there’s nothing on the dash. It’s up to me. Little secret here. So while I focus on the road, the passenger can do things like watch movies, play games. We saw an example where someone played the game through the app connection on their phone, so they could do whatever they wanted, and I wouldn’t know. With this SOIS concept, they have other ways that they can take the technology to another level. Let’s say I’m feeling a little stressed or maybe someone will fall asleep on the way. Well, they have other kinds of technology that can hook into your brain waves and say, hey, maybe if I’m a little stressed or a little sleepy, this display can tell me something. to help me wake up or they can. even adjust the lighting or the vibration and heat of my seat or the music to help me focus more or be less stressed on the road. Another thing you might not be able to tell from just looking at the house is that it. The screen it projects is up to 95% transparent. You know, I don’t necessarily have it all the way, you know, but I can still totally see it. I am now looking for the road. I saw the crosswalk. I see dotted lines. It’s not like a computer screen that takes up everything. I know it’s just a concept, but as someone who doesn’t buy cars with screens, you know what? I can dig it. Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching.
