Tiger Woods will design a new nine-hole short course as part of a new partnership with the Augusta National Golf Club.
Augusta National and Woods Architecture TGR Design will create a new course, part of the renovation of Augusta Municipal Golf Course (commonly known as the “patch”) four miles from the Master’s home.
The short course will be adjacent to the 18-hole Augusta Municipal Golf Course, which is currently being renovated by Tom Fazio and Beau Welling and is expected to open ahead of the Masters next April.
Woods did not participate in the Augusta National Announcement in Monday’s announcement as he continued to recover from surgery after a ruptured Achilles tendon last month but appeared on the video link to reflect on the exciting partnership.
“It’s really special to work with Augusta National Golf Club to serve the surrounding communities,” Woods said. “My passion for education and golf goes back a long time, and so does my relationship with Augusta National and the City of Augusta.
“This is an opportunity for change to enhance the next generation and provide meaningful educational programs and access to entertainment and affordable golf. I’m excited to work with the Augusta National Team and see both programs become a reality.”
Additionally, Woods’ TGR Foundation will build a TGR learning lab in Augusta, Georgia that will provide opportunities for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (Steam) education and young people.
Augusta National Golf Club and Masters Championship Chairman Fred Ridley said the partnership with former World 1 will help enrich access to high-quality educational programs and affordable golf in Augusta.
“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for Augusta and deepens the connection between our community and Tiger Woods, one of our greatest master champions,” Ridley said.
“We thank us for working with the TGR Foundation and co-investing in the Augusta community. In the TGR Learning Lab, this partnership reflects our shared interest in increasing access to high-quality programming and influencing the next generation in a tangible way.
“Our core on the patch is the commitment to building an affordable golf experience. We will take equal importance in creating opportunities to learn and fall in love with games and developing pipelines for jobs in the golf industry.”
