WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Secretary of State Marco Rubco spoke to Chinese foreign minister Wange in a phone call with diplomats from President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday.

The call is the first publicly disclosed contact between an official in the second Trump administration and a Chinese counterpart.

According to a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the call, the two discussed US-China relations and Taiwan.

Wang told Rubio, a well-known China Hawk, “I hope you will do well to heal yourself and play the future of the Chinese and American people and the whole world,” according to the reading.

In his confirmation in the Senate that was confirmed last week, Rubio was labeled by China as a grave threat to the United States.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the talks, which come days after Trumps on Wednesday over China’s role in the fentanyl trade.

On Thursday, in a speech at the World Economic Forum, Trump said he was looking forward to “very good” engagement with China including dealing with China.

Last week, Xi and Trump agreed to a phone call ahead of the latter’s inauguration for a second term, to create a strategic communication channel on “major issues.”

During his first term, Trump quickly struck a relationship with the XI and the two men hosted each other in Florida and Beijing. But that hasn’t stopped the heavyweights reeling from a trade war that has unleashed a series of tit-for-tat titiffs and disrupted global supply chains.

According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang told Rubio that the heads of state of China and the United States have “pointed the direction and established the tone for China-US relations.”

“The teams on both sides must implement the important integration of the two heads of State, maintain communication, develop relations with China – and find the right way for China and the United States to come together in the bag time.”

Wang also said that China has “no intention of surpassing or replacing anyone, but we must protect our legitimate right to development.”

On Taiwan, he said that the island of Taiwan has been part of China’s territory since ancient times and China will never separate it from China.

“The United States has made a solemn commitment to maintain the one-China policy of the three Seno-US joint communications and must not go beyond its promise,” Wang said.

“A major power must act like a major power, must assume the appropriate responsibilities in the world, must help all countries achieve common development,” he added, the statements of the United States.
