Tottenham players can’t follow Postecoglou’s tactics, says Lennon

Aaron Lennon believes Tottenham’s players are unable to implement Ange Postecoglou’s high-tempo philosophy.

Last night’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby means Spurs have won just one of their last nine Premier League games.

They are 13th in the table and the pressure is on Postecoglou, who himself described his form as “not acceptable”..

The Australian has said he will not change his style despite being on the disabled injury list but Lennon says something has to give.

The former Spurs winger told the Football Daily podcast: “It’s a big problem, I think the team looked really sad (against Arsenal). The team is stretched with injuries, but it is a big problem.

“His way is a fast tempo for 95 minutes, (but) the Spurs players don’t look like they can keep up that pace. It’s a huge problem, one win in nine, it’s not good at all.

“I think Arsenal were the better team. I don’t think it had weight, but Arsenal absolutely deserved to win. But this has caused a lot of unrest in the camp now, if they weren’t in the EFL Cup semi-final, I think there would be big problems.

Lennon calls for Spurs to strengthen

Lennon thinks injuries have derailed Spurs’ season and says they must strengthen in January to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.

He added: “It (injuries) is 100 per cent a huge factor. You’re not talking about one or two fringe players, you’re talking about your core players here. You’re talking about your number one goalkeeper, you’re talking about your two centre-halves, (Destiny) Udogi out, three of your back four are out, including your goalkeeper.

“It will affect any team, the lads who have come in have been brilliant. (Djed) Spence looked really good, I’m surprised he hasn’t played more football given how good he’s been in the last few weeks. What will be interesting to watch now is whether Spurs will look to strengthen their squad in this January window.

“They need cover at the back, they’ve shown they don’t have cover there. Archie Gray is filling in, he’s not a centre-half, he’s not even a right-back. I think they will look to cover a centre-half and possibly another striker.

“They have shown in the season that the team needs to be strengthened.”

Next up for Tottenham is a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday.
