Kiev, Ukraine – The lines are thin and shine in the sun, and long fibers are circling the branches of trees in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.

The rope is – sometimes still – attached to the Russian drone, keeping it safe from radio electronic barriers.

The drone may be shot down. Some are still operating, driving, full of dangers.

“When someone passes by, they just fly up and attack,” Oli, an officer in eastern Ukraine, told Al Jazeera.

“That’s why if you see (fiber), it’s better to break them out to protect yourself.”

He and his military sector are half a half of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose peace plan ends the Russian-Ukrainian war, which has laid the foundation on Moscow’s growing list situation.

Some potential soldiers think ahead and master the skills in wartime can help them survive – but their numbers have fallen due to the frustrating effect of Trump’s loud but fruitless promise of peace.

“We have few civilian students,” Andriy Pronin, one of the pioneers of Ukrainian drone warfare, told Al Jazeera, who opened a school for aspiring drone operators in Kiev. “Everyone thinks the war will end soon.”

He added that most of his cadets are experienced soldiers these days.

When many such soldiers discovered another Russian franchise received from Trump, they felt betrayed.

“We are like a devout wife. We are the last ones to understand the husband’s infidelity,” Ihor, an officer at Odesa, the Black Sea port, told Al Jazeera.

Odesa is dangerously close to the occupied areas of the southern Kherson region and the attached Crimea, from which Russian drones and missiles attack the city almost every day and night.

“What we heard (about peace negotiations) was nothing more than rumor,” he said.

Last week, Trump imposed tariffs on 185 countries – but excluded Russia and its closest allies, Belarus and North Korea.

The White House also lifted sanctions from the Kremlin on one of Ukraine’s main negotiators, Kirill Dmitriev, who visited the White House last week for a two-day radar meeting.

Dmitriev was born in Kiev and American-educated people who manage Russia’s sovereign wealth funds, reportedly linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Reuters, Dmitriev’s wife, Natalya Popova, is “representative of one of Putin’s daughters, Katerina Tikhonova, who is an agent of the foundation that studies with Moscow State University.”

During a televised Sunday, Dmitriev complained that “there are still a large number of Russian enemies in the U.S. government” and condemned the “complete disinformation” movement, excluding Moscow’s view.

Russian drone crashed into an apartment building near the northeastern city of Kharkif on Thursday, killing a 12-year-old girl, her parents and neighbors, and injuring 34 people.
