US President Donald Trump takes office

“We will expand our territory,” says Trump. Um, where?

Three remarkable words were inserted into Trump’s inaugural speech — deep enough in the middle of a long sentence that they risk going unnoticed.

Trump talked about expanding the American territory, which did not happen in generations. He has inserted the words “expand our territory” into a series of things he wants to do.

That’s obviously significant given all of Trump’s recent musings: creating Canada as a country, annexing Greenland, and restoring the Panama Canal.

But it was unclear. He was just talking about restoring the Panama Canal, and then he was talking about raising the American flag on Mars.

It was inserted into the intervention’s to-do list: “The United States will again be considered a growing nation—one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations, and carries our flag to new and beautiful horizons . And we will follow our manifest destiny into the stars – to launch American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars. Ambition is the lifeblood of a great nation and right now our nation is more ambitious than any other.”

To be clear, Trump did not refer to Canada or Greenland in any way in his speech. For what it’s worth, the idea of annexing any of those places is deeply unpopular with Americans, according to poll the Wall Street Journal published a few days ago.
