RPG Group chairman and billionaire Harsh Goenka has the internet talking after he shared a hot spot about financial losses reported by companies owned by Shark Tank India judges.
Posting on X, Goenka praised the show as a platform for budding entrepreneurs, but punctuated his admiration by referencing the iconic Jaws movies.
“I enjoy #SharktankIndia as a program and think it’s a great platform for our budding entrepreneurs,” Goenka wrote. He added with a touch of humor, “but whenever I think of sharks, I think of the movie Jaws and Sagining!”
Goenka’s post included a table detailing the financial losses of companies associated with sharks: prominent businessmen such as Aman Gupta (ship), Peyush Bansal (Lenskart), Anupam Mittal (Shaadi.com), Kunal Bahl (Snapdeal), Namita Thapar (Pharmaceutical Emcure)) , Vineeta Singh (Sugar Cosmetics) and Amit Jain (Cardekho). The data, which painted a light-hearted picture, quickly caught fire online.
Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com and one of the Sharks, was not one to let the post go unanswered. Acknowledging Goenka’s joke, but questioning the accuracy of the data, Mittal responded to X, stating, “I know you meant it as a joke, so with all due respect, I think you’ve reacted to what appears to be superficial, biased and incomplete data”.
Mittal added a witty twist to his defense: “Happy to learn from the hawkers, but just to clarify, like you, sharks don’t bleed red, we bleed blue and that’s why we do what we do.”
The exchange struck a chord with netizens, sparking debate on social media. Opinions ranged from appreciation for the Sharks’ efforts to foster entrepreneurship to strong criticism of their financial results.
Some users praised the sharks, highlighting the risks of investing in startups. “Losses are part of the game. Risks are taken to support innovative ideas,” one user wrote. Another added: “Why not join Shark Tank? It will be amazing with your super wit. “
However, not everyone agreed. Criticism ranged from questioning the judges’ ratings to cynicism about the show’s authenticity. “Now it’s like any other TV show: assets, emotional stories, laughs, fights and overall funding less advertising revenue,” remarked one user.
Suggestions for Goenka to sit on the shark board board flooded the comments. “Start new shows ‘Harsh Tank’ – India needs your wisdom,” said one user, while another commented, “Shark Tank India shows that the concept is very good…but the selection of judges is questionable .”
