Sanjiv Puri, chairman of cigarette-to-consumer goods conglomerate ITC, has also weighed in on the ongoing 90-hour work week debate. Puri said in a recent interview that rather than the number of hours, it’s important that employees are aligned with the company’s bigger vision.

His comments come amid raging debate surrounding L&T chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s remarks that employees should work 90 hours a week.

“If you ask a bricklayer what he does, he might say he’s laying a brick, another might say he’s building a wall, but some might say he’s building a castle. That’s the vision workers should have,” he said. say PTI in an interview.

Asked if that means he’d rather not spend a few hours on it, Puri said, “We wouldn’t do that.”

Further, Puri explained that it is important to empower employees with the vision and purpose of the company.

“We use part of the vision and we want to contribute to making the vision a reality. And we enable vitality by our processes, by the resources we provide, by the freedom to act, that we provide, the empowerment that we provide, which are very different goals and very clear to people, and those are the main things we look at.”

To make matters worse, Subrahmanyan said he regrets not being able to make employees work on Sundays. An undated video where the president can be heard making these remarks went viral on social media.

He also questioned the need for employees to spend time at home. “What are you doing sitting at home? How long can you look at your wife and how long can the wife look at the husband.”

Commenting on the viral video, Puri said, “I know he (Subrahmanyan) has debated a lot, but let me tell you the philosophy with which you look at it.”
