We’re Scared by the Simple, Scary Premise of Blumhouse’s Latest

You want it feel safe at home. That is a standard of living. You need a place that makes you feel comfortable, calm, and excited to take life’s challenges. But, what happens if the house is not safe? What if your safety is challenged by a mysterious presence that appears out of nowhere and starts taunting you? It’s not a pretty thought, so it’s also a good premise for a movie.

This is the introduction to The Lady in the Yarddirected by Jaume Collet-Serra (Keep going, Black Adam), which opens March 28. It stars Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven, Till) as a mother of two children whose husband died in a car accident. Things seem to be bad things but then a mysterious woman dressed in black appears from anywhere in their yard. And just sitting there. Watch the intriguing trailer for The Lady in the Yard.

Like this a home invasion movie but worse. Home invasion movies are scary because they are scenarios where the safety and sanctity of your home is threatened. Here though, it’s less of a home invasion and more of a home run. The woman sitting in the yard, warning the character “Today is the day,” builds crazy, scary tension and anticipation. We are very much here for it.

So what’s the deal with the girl? Where is he from? What does he want? Universal’s official plot description gives us a little tease: “Ramona assumes the girl (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: believer, A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Julie Taymor) is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps closer and closer to the house, it becomes clear that she is no ordinary person and her intentions are peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the clutches of the woman who will never let them go.” Oh no, she’s “creeping closer and closer to home?” No, no, no. Don’t like it. Not even one.

We think it’s the ghost of someone involved in a car accident, right? Or maybe something creepier and smarter? We’ll find out on March 28.
