Manchester United’s home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday was actually a “huge positive” for new head coach Ruben Amorim, Gary Neville has suggested.
United had most of the possession and had more xG (2.24) during the game than Bournemouth (1.24), with more shots on target and three times as many touches in the opposition box, but Failed to score and conceded three runs.
It means Amorim has won just four of his opening nine since taking charge a month ago, with losses in four of his last six against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur (Carabao Cup) and Bournemouth. United were 3-0 down against Spurs before conceding two goals.
An impressive Neville, speaking about his former club on it Self-titled Sky Sports podcastSaid run of results actually shows Amorim where there are deficiencies and what needs to be changed.
“I think it’s a huge positive that Reuben Amorim is looking at what he’s got,” Neville said. “In the past, there have been times when you could joke that you’ve got a better group of players because of decent results and moving up the league. But they’re a mile apart in every way.
“Playing the way Amorim wants to play, with the 3-4-3, he’s got to change it. He’s rotated the team and scored a try to everyone and I don’t think there’s a lot of people who’ve seen him and thought, ‘Yeah, I’ll put you on the bus.’ Want’ They’re all very common, and I don’t know how it happened – they’re better than what they show, but it’s a clear sustainable pattern.
“It’s a big positive that Ruben Amorim has had the chance to see these players in the cold light of day. He’s had a six-month beauty parade if you like – an ugly parade. He’s seeing what Manchester United fans have. Looking back ten years, there needs to be a cultural change.
“It’s a real tough time, there’s not much to like about the performance levels or the way they play. They’re all lads who try their best, it’s not a personal attack, but they’re not good enough to play. Manchester UnitedBecause this club aims to be at the top.
“Looking at these players it’s quite clear, they’re not that good.”
United are next in action at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, with the hosts in the relegation zone but coming off the back of a 3-0 away win against fellow strugglers Leicester City.
