This is the portrait of family happiness.
Duchess of Sussex picks flowers, cuts vegetables and decorates cake in trailer Her new Netflix show.
There’s also a scene where she harvests honey and hugs her husband, Prince Harry.
Meghan appears to have reshaped her image. PR expert Chloe Franses describes her new look as similar to a ‘traditional wife’ social media trendsinspired by 1950s housewives.
In that sense, it was a departure for Meghan, known as a feminist and a Hollywood actress.
But Francis said this was actually a homecoming for Meghan, as the duchess was a lifestyle blogger before marrying Harry.
As with Meghan, this has also brought divisiveness. Francis praised it as “authentic,” while media relations expert Alex Silver called it “tone deaf.”
So what’s the rationale for her new TV show, With Love? Will it succeed?
‘Harry and Meghan are separating their brands’
One of the most striking things about the trailer is that Meghan is alone and not with Harry.
Since stepping down as senior royals in 2020 and moving to California, the pair have launched various ventures together, including starting a production company and charitable foundation.
But with this new show, the couple seems increasingly interested in doing their own thing professionally and creating two separate streams of income.
“They seem to have separated their brands,” said Pauline McLaren, professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway.
“I think it might have been more successful because I don’t think the two of them really got any strong recognition.”
Stay away from royal ties
The relaunch also means a break from royal life.
Since stepping down as senior royals, Harry and Meghan have continued to talk about the royal family — including Oprah Winfrey Interview 2021 and Harry’s book, Spare.
But MacLaren said Meghan was “no longer leveraging her royal connections” in the new TV show.
Instead, it focuses on lifestyle and health – areas she had already explored through her lifestyle blog The Tig before she met Harry.
On The Tig, Meghan shares beauty, diet and fashion tips, recipes, travel advice and words of wisdom about love and life.
Tig closed in 2017, but public relations experts say returning to the lifestyle may be a smart move.
“It’s a road well traveled for a woman in the public eye, whose lifestyle is both aspirational and challenging,” Frances said.
Others are more skeptical.
“There are more interesting and significant world events happening that she can talk about,” Silver said. “She could have raised awareness about charity work or something.
“I think she only cares about herself. As a publicist, I can’t understand how she can’t read the room.”
Forays into the lifestyle space have also backfired on some others in the public eye.
Brooklyn Beckham’s first photography book is Harshly ridiculed on social mediafor example – a photo of an elephant being particularly outraged.
“It’s about her own business interests.”
This isn’t Meghan’s first foray into the business world – an industry filled with risks and rewards.
The couple’s previous business plans include a multi-million pound deal with Netflix.
They appeared in another Netflix show, “Harry & Meghan,” about their relationship. The pair were also named executive producers on the recent Polo documentary, which received low reviews from critics including The Guardian and The Telegraph.
Spotify’s big bet on Meghan also fell through.
In July 2023, the streaming giant and the Sussexes’ Archewell Audio announced that they had decided to part ways.
Experts suggested at the time Meghan’s Prototype Podcast Doesn’t Have a Big Enough Audience Yet to justify continuing.
Last March, she launched a different lifestyle brand called American Riviera Orchard. It currently has over 600,000 followers on Instagram and has nine posts since launch, but has not posted since.
Some speculate that with this new venture, Meghan hopes to open up more business opportunities for herself, such as partnerships with major supermarkets and brands.
If so, she would follow in the footsteps of the likes of Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow, who has found huge success with her lifestyle platform Goop.
“This was clearly strictly for her own business interests,” Silver said.
“They know their income will dry up at some stage. Their lifestyle is quite luxurious, they mingle in high-end circles and they don’t want to be poor relatives.”
Will this change the public’s perception of her?
When it comes to the new TV show, royal expert Victoria Murphy said she “(does) not think people will watch it initially and that it will do well”.
But the real test, she said, will be whether it can sustainably attract a large following and truly build a strong global brand for her beyond the monarchy.
McLaren agreed, saying she thinks the show will resonate with certain groups of people, especially in the United States.
“A lot of the public isn’t interested in that, but I don’t think that’s her goal – I think she’s going to try to make other mothers really like her.”
Silver believes Meghan may want to “detoxify” her brand with the new show.
But she doesn’t think the show will resonate with the public.
“I can’t imagine this becoming a widely publicized thing,” Silver said.
Perhaps the reaction to the trailer tells us all we need to know about how this latest venture might go down.
After it fell Thursday, thousands of inches of column were dedicated to its memory.
The Daily Mail, for example, dissected every detail of every frame in the trailer, much of it unsympathetically.
The Duchess seems to be perpetually under the radar – especially from the British tabloids. But she also has a core fan base on social media.
To her critics, they’ll say it’s glamorous, superficial and the worst of Hollywood.
But for her fans, they’ll say it’s great to see her back and that’s exactly what’s been missing from the royal family.
In other words, it could reinforce any perception people have of Meghan.
