Freya Kemp, Lindsay Smith, Beth Heath and Rianna McDonald-Guy have received their first Ashes call-ups as England have revealed their squad ahead of next month’s tour of Australia.
Heather Knight will captain the three English teams looking to recapture the Ashes for the first time since 2014.
England and Australia will play three one-day internationals, three T20s (scoring two runs each) and a four-day Test match (scoring four runs) in the multi-format series.
Hampshire all-rounder Kemp and spinner Smith have been included in the England T20 squad, while Durham wicketkeeper-batsman Heath has also been included in the Test squad.
Surrey’s McDonald Gay has just been named in the Ashes Test squad for the first time after taking two wickets in his first Test in South Africa.
Lancashire bowler Kate Cross has been included in the ODI and Test squads despite missing England’s recent Tests in South Africa after suffering back spasms in the third ODI at Potchefstroom victory.
But there is no place for Tammy Beaumont in England’s IT20 squad, with Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Danni Wyatt-Hodge following England’s 3-0 win over South Africa in the opener. Maia Bouchier is once again favored by the selectors.
Bowler Mahika Gaur, who was unable to participate in the recent tour due to injury, will continue her return to bowling with the team.
England will fly to Australia on January 2 and will play a warm-up match against the Governor’s XI on January 9 before playing the first ODI against Australia at North Sydney Oval on January 11 .
After two more ODIs in Melbourne and Hobart, England and Australia will play three T20 matches in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide before a four-day, day-night first-ever Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) test.
In 2023, Australia entered the Ashes series as the Ashes team after retaining eight draws in England and winning the Test match at Trent Bridge.
Lewis believes England are in a ‘good position’ ahead of Ashes
England head coach Jon Lewis said: “We have named a balanced squad for the Ashes series, with young players and experience. The Ashes series is always special. We want to go there, play the way we do and Excited about the Ashes series and the challenges ahead.
“We’ve just come back from a very successful tour of South Africa which gave us some really good preparation. We’re in a really good position. We’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on what happened at the World Cup and we’re in a better position now than we were at the World Cup. Be good when you get on the plane to South Africa.
“It’s a very, very difficult challenge. Is it the most difficult challenge? Yes, probably, almost. Winning a 50-over World Cup in India is also a big challenge, so 2025 is a big one for us. year. We have two distinct challenges that we are very much looking forward to.”
