Apple and Google are facing new UK examination in their mobile ecosystems, including their app store, browser and operating system. The British Regulator Competition and Markets Authority announces two investigations of companies on Thursday, with the potential to request Apple and Google to open their ecosystems if it is for the best interests of mobile users.
CMA said it will look at three potential issues: The competition between and within Apple and Google can prevent competitors in market entering; The possibility of companies used their domination to favor their own applications and services; and potentially “exploitative behavior,” which can force developers to sign uneven terms.
In many ways, CMA appears to follow the regulator steps in the European Union competition, with Asked More Opening From Apple When it comes to its mobile operating system. “More Competition Mobile Ecosystems can enhance new innovations and new opportunities in different services used by millions of people, App Store, Browser or Operating System,” Sarah said Cardell, chief executive of CMA. “Better competition can also enhance progress here in the UK, with businesses that can offer new and new classes of Apple and Google’s products.”
Google issues an answer to examination of a blog postwhere it says it welcomes the opportunity to put the benefits of his open-source model for CMA. “Android adds to the selection, reducing prices and democracy access to smartphones and apps,” wrote Oliver Bethell, Senior Director in Google competition. “This is the only example of a successful and viable open source mobile operating system available to developers and manufacturers to create helpful and secure apps and devices.”
Apple does not respond to a request for comment.
CMA uses new powers to check digital tech companies after introducing a new law, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Actlast year. After investigations, which is expected to expire in October, it may request companies to change the way they operate. Potential requirements can include Apple’s request and Google to open access to the main part of the phone with other developers in the app, or make it easier for people to use alternate stores In app and pay for in-app content in different ways.
