Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. predicts his son David “Mexican Freak” Benavidez will “destroy” David Morrell will compete in the 11-day light heavyweight division on February 1 at the PBC Prime Video PPV in Las Vegas.
This fight will prove whether Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is just a “fake“‘The Monster,’ lives off the hype he gets from fighting smaller opponents at 168, or so if he’s real. Morel said he’s seen fighters like Benavidez and thinks He is 100% “fake”.
Now, at 175, Benavidez fights a younger fighter of his size but with more power, and he could be exposed by Morel (11-0, 9 KOs).
Exit strategy planned?
According to Morel’s team, Benavidez’s height is between 215 and 220 centimeters. So if he fails on February 1st against the talented Cuban, he has the size to reinvent himself at lightweight.
If Benavidez loses, he may need to decide whether to move up to lightweight to try and salvage his career in that weight class. Staying at 175 would be a mistake for him because if he can’t beat Morel then he certainly won’t be successful against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol.
Jose Sr. is already discussing exit strategydiscussed the possibility of Benavidez moving up to lightweight to challenge WBA and WBO champion Gilberto “Zuldo” Ramirez for the belt. He has to wait until IBF champion Jai Opetaia takes his turn against Zurdo in a three-belt unification match. But either man would be willing to fight Benavidez, as he lost to Morel.
Even if he was knocked down by Morel, they would be willing to fight him because he would still be popular and he would likely have an excuse to explain his defeat. He mentioned injuries to explain why he struggled against Alexander Gvozdyk, and fans believed him. If he loses to Morel, he can do the same thing and people will give him a pass.
“We’re 100 percent locked into Morel. He’s a tough fighter and a young fighter. He’s a two-time world champion and hungry. We’re not underestimating this guy,” Jose Benavid Sr. Si said. Sean Zittle Regarding David Morel, David Benavidez will face him on February 1st.
“We did it 100 percent. David (Benavidez) is 28 years old. In my opinion, I think David is going to destroy him (Morrell). Now let’s focus on that. Absolutely. Doubtful, David has big dreams. Who wouldn’t want to fight the winner of Bivol and Beterbiev, maybe even Zuldo Ramirez? Have a fight.
“Those fights were great. The monsters in this division are strong and have great opportunities at this weight. Zuldo Ramirez will fight another guy (IBF lightweight champion Jai Opetaia ) to fight for the belt, and hopefully we can have the opportunity to do that,” Benavidez Sr. said.
