Warner Bros. Discovery CNN announced on Thursday that it will lay off about 6% of its employees, or about 210 employees, to refocus its business on global digital audiences.

CNN CEO Mark Thompson announced the layoffs in a memo to employees on Thursday, confirming a CNBC report on Wednesday that layoffs were coming. Thompson noted in the memo that CNN does not expect a “significant” decline in total headcount this year as the company plans to invest $70 million in new digital initiatives.

“I know that regardless of the total number of job losses, the impact on the individuals involved is likely to be significant,” Thompson wrote in the memo obtained by CNBC. “If we are to thrive in the future, the process of change is critical, but I We both acknowledge the real consequences it has had on humanity, and we also regret it.”

The layoffs come as CNN realigns its linear television lineup and develops digital subscription products. The cuts will help CNN reduce production costs and consolidate its teams, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Some shows produced in New York or Washington may be moved to Atlanta because production costs there will be lower, people familiar with the matter said.

For the most part, the layoffs won’t affect CNN’s biggest names because they already have contracts, people familiar with the matter said. CNN has approximately 3,500 employees worldwide.

A CNN spokesperson declined to comment beyond Thompson’s statement.

CNN new plan

CNN announced several new initiatives in the memo. The company is planning a new way for digital subscribers to watch CNN programming outside of CNN Max, which exists within Warner Bros. Discovery Channel’s broader Max streaming service. In a note to staff, Thompson said CNN plans to release content details “in the coming months.” CNN plans to launch its own streaming service, CNN+, in 2022, but the service is closed Chris Licht was named CEO almost immediately.

October, CNN Launched a digital paywall, Heavy users of the site are charged $3.99 per month. The news organization aims to reach $1 billion in revenue by 2030.

CNN plans to hire at least 100 new positions in the coming months as it builds out its broader digital operations, investing in product and technology and “new high-quality journalism and storytelling.” Part of the investment will be used for “lifestyle-oriented digital products” that CNN is developing.

CNN is also revamping its linear television schedule in the United States and internationally.

NBC News also plans to make cuts later this week, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Two people familiar with the matter said that although the exact number could not be determined, the number of unemployed people would be well below 50. An NBC News spokesman declined to comment.

Both news organizations waited until after the U.S. presidential inauguration to make cuts. The news media landscape is shifting as fewer people watch linear television and more people consume news through streaming services and social media.
