Jack Skellington leaves the building so far so the Haunted Mansion reopened this weekend in its classic glory—but with some surprising updates.

In a part of the Los Angeles Timesat Disneyland Imagineering executive creative director Kim Irvine talks about some significant changes made to one of the Haunted Mansion’s most memorable characters—the bride—to recall the mystery of its origins when the park opened.

“We thought, what if we changed the story back to the original story that the Imagineers had about a lost bride in the attic grieving the loss of her husbands,” he told the LA Times. “It’s a sad thing. This is a story about lost love. “

Gone is the fan-favorite Black Widow backstory, which was part of the last update to the early season attraction. It features a bride with an interesting sense of agency that adds a fun evil element to the ride with the gag of the missing heads of her many husbands (missing, because she killed them). Times are changing, as are the elements of Disney attractions, and Disney Experiences has chosen to return with a more mystical take.

“The bride used to be an ax murderer, and this time we have to be really careful about people’s sensitivities,” Irvine said. “We’re celebrating a man who beheaded her husband, and it’s an amazing story. I know the fans—some love it and some say, ‘Oh, you changed something again.’ That’s our job. That’s what we’re here for.”

Now returned as a sad presence of a rushing bride, whose lovers seem ghost she for unknown reasons—maybe they died or maybe she just left him at the altar—it will be interesting to see how this mythology fits into the power of attraction. We will visit soon to better understand the new bride story and projection effects before making too many calls to support not only women’s rights but women’s wrongs.

The Haunted Mansion is now open at the Disneyland Resort during park season 70th celebration later this year.
