‘Does he deserve to die?’: Relatives of captured South African miners condemn the police operation




A rescue operation at South Africa’s Stilfontein mine has ended after 248 miners were pulled alive and 78 bodies were pulled from underground. A failed police operation aimed at “smudging” illegal miners out of an abandoned gold mine by blocking the shipment of food and medicine has led to reports of cannibalism, starvation and allegations of human rights abuses.
