In Muslim-majority Indonesia, the island of Flores trains priests for the rest of the world




In the majority Muslim country of Indonesia, the island of Flores is an exception of sorts. Located in the south of the archipelago, its population is 70 percent Catholic and many young people hope to become men of the cloth. Each year, Flores trains priests who continue their ministry around the world: in the United States, Africa, Europe and South America. Indonesian priests have gained a good reputation and are considered fair and tolerant, especially on LGBT issues – so much so that the Catholic Church in Flores considers it essential to its future and survival in the region.
