Mediators Qatar, Egypt and the United States stepped up efforts to reach a truce that would facilitate the release of hostages held in Gaza since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the war. US President Joe Biden has claimed that an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages is “on the brink” of finalisation, just days before the inauguration of his successor, Donald Trump.
