Firefighters are fighting to prevent the largest and deadliest wildfire threatening Los Angeles from spreading into one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

Air crews have been bombarding the burning hills with water and retardant to stop the Palisades Fire, which has grown to 1,000 acres and is now threatening Brentwood.

Officials have been on the defensive as firefighters struggled to control the rapidly spreading blaze, hydrants ran dry and anger grew.

Winds are expected to pick up again overnight, further fanning the flames that have killed at least 11 people.

“Los Angeles County has experienced yet another night of unimaginable horror and heartbreak,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath said Saturday.

Firefighters have made some progress fighting the Palisades Fire, the most severe inferno that has burned nearly 23,000 acres, and is now 11% contained.

But the fire has spread near Mandeville Canyon, triggering evacuation orders for large swaths of Brentwood, home to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Disney CEO Bob Iger and NBA star LeBron James ·James’ luxurious enclave.

Also in the evacuation zone is the Getty Center, a hilltop museum that houses more than 125,000 works of art, including masterpieces by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet and Degas. The building has so far remained undamaged.

The second largest fire is the Eaton Fire, which has burned more than 14,000 acres and is currently 15% contained. Firefighters have largely contained two smaller fires, the Kenneth Fire and the Hurst Fire.

But the National Weather Service warned that the Santa Ana winds that initially sparked the fires will increase again on Saturday and Sunday.

Seven neighboring states, the federal government, Canada and Mexico have flooded resources into California.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The two largest disasters combined razed an area more than twice the size of Manhattan.

About 153,000 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders, and another 166,000 residents were warned they may also have to flee.

The political fallout has already begun.

On Friday, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, rumored to be a White House hopeful, ordered an investigation into why a key reservoir was taken out of service and some fire hydrants ran dry.

Los Angeles Fire Chief Christine Crowley complained about the lack of water.

“When firefighters came to the hydrant, we expected water,” she said.

Chief Crowley also criticized city leadership for cutting the department’s budget and eliminating mechanic positions, which she said left more than 100 pieces of fire equipment unserviceable.

“Let me be clear on one thing, the fire chief and I are focused on fighting fires and saving lives, and any disagreements we may have will be resolved privately,” Bass said at a news conference.

More than 70,000 people have signed a Change.org petition calling for the mayor’s immediate resignation.

Officials said a sunset-to-sunrise curfew was being strictly enforced in evacuated areas as concerns about looting grew.

Newsom announced Saturday that he would double the number of local National Guard troops to “keep communities safe.”

About two dozen people were arrested for burglaries, robberies and curfew violations.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said cadaver dogs were helping 40 search and rescue teams search the flattened neighborhood.

The death toll is expected to rise once house-to-house searches are carried out.

The fire was so intense that the wheel alloy on the car melted into puddles of liquid metal.

Real estate agent Rick McGeagh told Reuters that only six of 60 homes in his Pacific Palisades neighborhood survived.

All that remains in his house is a statue of the Virgin Mary.

“Everything else is ashes and rubble,” said the 61-year-old father of three.
