Mets legend David Wright has some advice for free agent first basemen Pete Alonsowho spent his entire career with the Mets.
“It’s a different feeling when you get drafted, develop and play for the team that gives you your first opportunity.” Wright says At a press conference on Wednesday,
“When you put on that jersey every night, you feel a little bit more – maybe more – proud. I hope he remembers that and doesn’t forget that. That being said, I never Blame a player for maximizing his earning potential.”

Wright knows what it means to spend his entire career with one team. this Seven-time All-Star Played for the Mets from 2004 to 2018.
The team just announced that it will retire Wright’s No. 5 jersey number on July 19.
Alonso, 30, has been in the middle of the order for the Mets since his debut.
Alonso was the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year, a four-time All-Star and a two-time Home Run Derby winner.

Since Alonso’s debut, only the New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge Hit more home runs (232) than Alonso (226).
The star first baseman has also been durable throughout his career, including in every game last season.
Alonso hit 34 home runs, drove in 88 RBIs, and batted .240 for the Mets last season. He hit .273 with four homers in 13 postseason games.

The first baseman market has shrunk after many teams made moves to fill the position.

If Alonso reunites with the Mets, the first baseman would be just 26 homers shy of passing Darryl Strawberry for the team’s career home run lead.
