Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi first met with Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus, eight months ago Removal of the former prime minister of the country and long-term Indian allies.

Modi said he hopes to “build a positive relationship with Bangladesh based on a pragmatic spirit”, according to Misri. However, he also said Modi repeated New Delhi’s concerns about “rape” of Bangladesh’s minority – which Dhaka claimed was exaggerated.

His press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, said Yunus’ long-standing complaint with Modi Dhaka was an inflammatory remark from Hasina’s exile in India.

Public opinion in Bangladesh opposes India in part because of its decision to provide asylum to Hasina. New Delhi has not responded to Dhaka’s request to send her home for trial.
