Netflix Introduces More Member Offerings That Include Ads

Netflix introduced a new type of additional member account: additional members with ads.

The streamer announced a new offer of a shareholder letter on Tuesday before the fourth quarter earnings call. In the US, according to Netflix help siteadding an additional member with ads costs $7 per month, and the option is available with existing additional member accounts without ads.

According to the Netflix site, these additional member accounts are working similar to the previous version as a means of paying more for an additional person located in another household. You need an ad-free version of Netflix — either Standard or Premium — to buy an extra member slot. Netflix Premium subscribers can add up to two slots, and Standard customers get one. Additional members will have a separate account and password.

Netflix also announced a price increase on Tuesday. Now, the ad-based extra member version cost $1 per month less than the Standard with Ads plan and $2 less than the ad-free extra member account.

Besides the price, one difference between an additional member with ads and a Standard Subscriber with Ads is that additional members can only view and download on one device at a time. Standard ads members get two simultaneous screens and devices for downloading. Additional members get one profile, and Standard with Ads customers get up to five.

In the shareholder letter, Netflix said it aims to give members “more choice and flexibility” in additional member offerings. Ad-supported sign-ups accounted for more than 55% of sign-ups in Netflix’s ad countries in its fourth quarter, according to the letter, and members based in ad grew nearly 30% quarter on quarter.
