Police in Oregon say they have arrested a suspect they believe murdered a man who disappeared almost three years ago.
Murphy Calvin Henry II, 54, was arrested Jan. 9 on suspicion of murdering 30-year-old Ryan Staggs. Staggs was last seen in his newport, oregon on January 31, 2022, and was reported missing the following month.
Despite numerous clues in the case, none point to Staggs, and the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Cold Case Unit “continues to follow leads and develop new information regarding: Staggs missing Effective May 2022,” the Newport Police Department said in a statement.
While executing a search warrant in the case on Dec. 27, cadaver dogs “noticed the odor of human remains in soil removed from the backyard,” but no human remains were found. However, investigators were able to obtain more information and identify additional witnesses.

On January 8, a shallow grave believed to be Staggs’ remains was discovered in “remote Lincoln County.” The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office is awaiting formal identification, police said.
Staggs remains listed on two missing persons websites: the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and the Missing Persons of America website.

His missing poster identifies him as the owner of Happy Cars in Newport. Before disappearing, he was “shot in the face by an unknown assailant” while sleeping at home in August 2021.
The poster also stated that Staggs’ vehicle was missing when he disappeared, but was “later found and sold at auction.”

Henry was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, police said.
