Arsenal secured a massive three points at home in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux.
With Liverpool thrashing Ipswich Town 6-0 at home last weekend, it felt Arsenal’s primary task on Saturday would be to match the league leaders’ result.
The Gunners, however, didn’t have it all their own way at Molineux, with Wolves keen to overturn their recent slump in form. The hosts dominated the opening exchanges and created the first big opening, but Pablo Sarabia blazed his volley over an excellent Nelson Semedo cross.
Arsenal were most dangerous when Wolves had the ball, with Vitor Pereira’s side intent on turning over possession in the build-up phase. Leandro Trossard twice teed up Kai Havertz with pinpoint deliveries, but the German somehow failed to find the back of the net with both efforts.
The quality of the first half was disappointing, and it was contested just before the break when Michael Oliver sent over Miles Lewis-Skelley for what was regarded as a ruthless and dangerous challenge on Matt Doherty.
Arsenal were not deterred despite their man disadvantage and had a brilliant spell in the contest at the start of the second half. Gabriel, Declan Rice and Havertz (again) came close to breaking the deadlock before Mathias Cunha wasted chances at the other end.
Joao Gomes’ ill-advised tackle on Jurien, who was booked in the first half, got him dismissed, and Arsenal wasted no time in capitalizing as substitute Ricardo Calafiori scored the winner with a fine finish inside the area. .
The visitors then had no problem seeing the game out, although Ryan Ait-Nouri could have done better when he found himself behind Arsenal’s defence, but shot straight at David Rye.
