President Trump rescinds Biden’s AI executive order

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump withdrawn a 2023 executive order signed by former President Joe Biden seeks to reduce the potential risks AI poses to consumers, workers, and national security.

Biden’s executive order directed the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to author guidance that helps companies identify — and correct — errors in models, including biases. The executive order also requires developers of AI systems to share the results of safety tests with the US government before releasing them to the public.

Critics allied to Trump argue that the executive order’s reporting requirements are onerous and effectively force companies to reveal their trade secrets. During his campaign, Trump promised policies that would “support the development of AI rooted in free speech and human progress” — but declined to elaborate.
