Prime members can now get $50 off Kindle Colorsoft

Amazon expanded its ereader line a few months ago with the Kindle Colorsoft, the first model with a color display. However, at $280, it is actually quite expensive – especially compared to similar devices from competitors. That equation has changed somewhat, at least for Amazon Prime members. Right now they can .

That equates to a discount of 18 percent. This is the first time Amazon has lowered the price of Colorsoft, although you have to be a Prime member to take advantage of the deal.

There have been some teething issues with Colorsoft, with reports that some customers are seeing a yellow band at the bottom of their display. That issue also came up in our review unit. Amazon is offering refunds or replacements for affected devices.

The company sent us a second review unit without the yellow band. The display seems warmer overall as well, making it look more like the physical pages of a book. We have until we have tested the replacement unit for a longer period of time and made sure that the yellow-band problem does not occur again.

Page turning is fast on the seven-inch display, with 300 pixel-per-inch (ppi) density for black-and-white material and 150 ppi for color content. The device has 32GB of built-in storage and it supports Audible audiobooks. The Kindle Colorsoft runs for up to eight weeks on a single charge and you can top up the battery wirelessly or via USB-C.

The ereader has an IPX8 rating. it can withstand submersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes and 0.25 meters of seawater for three minutes, according to Amazon. So, you can take the Kindle Colorsoft to the pool or the beach without worrying about it getting wet.

There is a pinch-to-zoom feature that should be helpful for those who read Colorsoft graphic novels. Auto-adjusting front lighting is also available. Another major positive is that, unlike other Kindle models, Colorsoft does not feature lock screen ads by default.
