If Scotland are going to be busy bringing in new players this month, then signing at least one new defender is likely to be high on the agenda. Injuries to Leon Balogun, John Soutar, Neresho Kasanvijo and James Tavernier have left the Gers defence-less, leading to them being linked with several different defenders .
Earlier this week there was news that Rangers interested in signing Jonny Evans From Manchester United. The Northern Irishman is on the fringes of Old Trafford and could be on the move if Evans wants to explore.
The Rangers board would certainly be keen to bring in the defender before the transfer window closes, but Clement is said to be wary of a move for Evans given his age and would like the club to bring in a younger player choice. There are two other defenders on Rangers’ radar and they are Norwich City defenders Grant Hanley and former players Nikolai Katic. Hanley has barely featured for Norwich this season, while Katic is open to a return to Ibrox and has discussed it.
Rangers hoping to sign Kim in January transfer window
Evans, Hanley and Katic are not the only centre-backs the Gers are keeping an eye on, according to the Daily Record. Rangers are also considering a move for defender Richard King.
The 23-year-old currently plays for Jamaican side Knight Riders, where he has spent his entire career apart from a brief loan spell with Icelandic side IBV Vestmannaeyjar. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, King excelled at club level which led to him making 20 appearances for the Jamaican national team.
His performances in his homeland have not gone unnoticed and Rangers are now interested in signing the defender this month while they remain on the lookout for a new centre-back. With technical director Nils Koppen casting a wide net in search of talent to improve Clement’s squad, King has caught their attention.
The Gers are looking for young players who are not yet household names, who can then be sold for huge profits, similar to how Brighton operate in the Premier League. Igamani is a typical exampleBecause he was signed from a relatively unknown league in Morocco in the summer and is now becoming a key player for the Gers.
King is now thought to fit that profile but has been courted by Premier League sides including West Ham United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Brighton in the past.
