Rohit Sharma partners Ajinkya Rahane with Mumbai Ranji to save his career

India Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma returned to train with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (January 14) morning. Rohit Sharma is going through one of the worst slumps in his career and is looking to get back into shape by training with his domestic teammates.

The 37-year-old had a disappointing season in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, scoring just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.20. He opted out of the fifth Test, sparking speculation about his Test retirement. Rohit denied the rumours, saying he has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Rohit Sharma has joined the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad for training ahead of their upcoming match against Jammu and Kashmir. In a video shared by Star Sports on X (formerly known as Twitter), Rohit can be seen entering the iconic Wankhede Stadium and training with his Mumbai teammates.

In the video, which has gone viral on the internet, Rohit is batting alongside Mumbai Ranji Trophy captain and his long-time India teammate Ajinkya Rahane.

“Rohit Sharma is back where it all started – training with Mumbai Ranji! 🏏 Preparation, passion and focus are in full swing,” the caption read.

Rohit Sharma’s participation in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 still uncertain

Ajinkya Rahane led India to a historic Test series win in Australia and led Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title last season. Mumbai will take on Jammu and Kashmir in the sixth Elite Group A match of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season from January 23 to 26.

Mumbai currently has 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in the first round of Group A, ranking third with 22 points. They aim to consolidate their position in the second leg against Jammu and Kashmir.

It is unclear whether Rohit, India’s leading run-scorer in the ICC World Test Championship, will feature in the match. Rohit last played for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh in 2015, but there is speculation that he may end the decade-long gap by playing in the upcoming tournament.

He has the potential to correct his performance – Manoj Tiwary

Speaking to IANS, former India batsman Manoj Tiwary said he was confident in Rohit’s ability to return to form amid speculation about Rohit’s retirement. Tiwari added that loss of confidence affects a player’s performance but was optimistic that Rohit will work on improving his batting and rebounding ability.

“The performance didn’t go well, there’s no doubt about it. If the performance had gone well, he wouldn’t have fallen. He himself clarified in an interview after what happened in the last Test in Sydney that he didn’t score , which is why he feels he shouldn’t be playing.”

“When you don’t score runs, you lose confidence and if your confidence goes down, so does your scoring percentage. He will definitely work on improving his batting. He is a great run-getter in white-ball cricket. A run-scorer and with a lot of potential, a player like him might take time to get back into form, so I believe he has the potential to correct his performance in red-ball cricket as well,” he added.
