Severance season two is finally here and we cannot be silent about it. That we have two more months of new episodes on the way is definitely one of the best things that a bad 2025 has delivered so far, and things started with a bang in the premiere. We got to spend all kinds of time with the innies on the broken floor of Lumon and saw some compelling new mysteries unfold.

Last month, we spoke with the showrunner Dan Erickson about the episode because we know COME want to know what he has to say about certain things. Here are the spoilers we originally cut our full interview.

Germain Lussier, io9: I was shocked when Helly lied about what she saw as her outtie and then it moved into many questions about who this person is, what they want, etc. How big is the weather. that and where did the idea come from?

Dan Erickson: Well, this is a big part of it. One thing we talked about in that scene was, every character can be honest and how honest are they? We’re talking about “Will Helly tell the truth?” or “Will he keep it?” I think even if nothing else happens, Helly will be ashamed of what she knows. So there is a reason why each character wants to be unfaithful to others. Mark too. I think there’s a question of whether he wants Helly to know this thing that he’s learned, or does he feel like he needs to take his time to own that and present that to her? So we talk for each of the three characters who reached the top.

io9: Another big surprise is Miss Huang, who is just the most interesting, amazing character. What can you tell me about him?

Erickson: Yes, there is always something interesting about the idea of ​​having a child in that role and there is this big question of why? Why did Lumon do that? What is this? What are the larger implications of this? But I think his presence took away from the characters. I mean, they’re all surprised by his presence because the fact that he’s this kid (and) he has this disarming quality to him where it’s hard to hate a kid, you know? But at the same time, he fills that role of management and he is also, at least experienced, older than them because each of the innies only has, at most, two years of life and even only eight hours a day. So it’s an amazingly powerful dynamic that you can only have on this show. And we were lucky to find an actor who could really just play the smiling corporate thing and then all of a sudden it goes by and you see this weird darkness underneath him. And so in a way he is Lumon incarnate. He is both of those things at once.

io9: Another interesting twist this season is the “outtie family visitation suite.” How important is this period and, again, where did that idea come from?

Erickson: The thing about Lumon and about their evil light is that they will inspire what is most important to you. And for Dylan in one season he was very happy with this kind of artificially created sense of pencil erasers and finger traps and these little prizes that represented success. Once he finds out he has a family, a finger trap is just a finger trap. Suddenly, his sense of the importance of life was completely changed. And what will Lumon do? They will incentivize that. They will tell him that you will see your wife when you finish your work and you toe the line because that is the most important thing to him. He is willing to do this even at the expense of his work family. And that was the predicament he found myself in.
