In the latest episode of Shark Tank India Season 4, YouTuber Gaurav Taneja appeared as a pitchman along with his business partner from his fitness brand BeastLife. The fitness brand sells a variety of products including easy-to-digest protein supplements, creatine monohydrate, and energy-boosting mass gainers.
During the launch, they claimed that the brand quickly gained traction, registering sales worth ₹1 crore within just an hour of its website launch. After that SUGAR Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh asked them, “You earn ₹1 crore per hour, then what are you doing here?”
During the presentation, Taneja and her business partner even talked about their subscribers and followers on social media. Later, Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal asked Taneja about his unique users on YouTube.
To this, Gaurav replied that he is not that well versed with social media numbers as they focused on business numbers. Later, Mittal says, “You’re a good influencer but a terrible entrepreneur so far. Sorry, but you can’t outsource entrepreneurship.”
Taneja sought ₹1 crore in exchange for 1% equity in order to scale his easily digestible protein supplement business. Unable to answer simple questions, Taneja did not get a deal on the show.
Needless to say, the presentation went viral on social media. Users were pleased that the Sharks did not offer investment to Taneja and called the tone “brutal”.
“Couldn’t have been happier to see that sharks have a backbone,” commented one user.
“It was so satisfying to see his ego crushed. The sharks were honest and brutal with him (sic),” said a second user.
“Anupam ne sahi class lagani shuru ki (sic),” wrote a third user. A fourth user wrote: “Ab Influencer wala ego leke Shark Tank jayega toh Business k suggestions kaise positively lega (sic).”
“The last 5 minutes were brutal,” said one user.
“Vineeta showed her that whatever sale she did, she was able to do it because of her fans and she has no future plans to compete with the giants in the same market,” said another user.
