Former England and Manchester City defender Steph Hughton has shared her views on this season’s Women’s Super League title race as she predicts it will be the most competitive yet.

Houghton retired from playing at the end of last season and is now often on the sidelines as a pundit. This week, her name was included in Char 2024 WSLalong with former Hall of Fame Arsenal teammates Alex Scott and Gilly Flaherty as well as recently retired trailblazing referee Rebecca Welch.
Speaking at an event on Monday where the four were formally recognized for their achievements both on and off the pitch, Hughton shared his views on this season’s title race and why it could be the best yet.
“These next two months are really crucial in terms of the league title and Chelsea are on top at the moment,” said the former England star. “But, you look at the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal (close behind).
“There will be points dropped and that’s the beauty of this league because it’s so exciting. It’s nice to be on the other side and not feel that pressure.
“I honestly think the second half of this season will be the most competitive yet.”
The WSL returns this weekend after the winter break with some blockbuster clashes including the Manchester derby. Chelsea will be at West Ham, while Arsenal will face Crystal Palace.
Houghton believes the WSL has had a number of standout performers this season, including his former teammate who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
“There are some good actors so far,” she concluded. “For Chelsea he is a great retainer because he is a player who is really consistent.
“She’s adding goals and assists to her game. I think Chelsea are proving hard to beat at the moment.
“There’s a lot that comes out. Alessia Russo is also starting to hit some form for Arsenal. Before Hampo’s (Lauren Hamp’s) injury I think she was without a doubt the standout player in the league but there are still four or five months to go so there will be a few more names to add.”
